Meet Cherylne Magalei! Cheryl won SA’s first Value award in January 2018 for Integrity. Cheryl has been with SA since September 2015 in Adult Supported Living as a Residential Coordinator. She recently began a new chapter with SA and is assisting with our respite clients.

Cheryl really enjoys the interactions with the clients. Whenever she works a shift, she has a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and a sense of belonging. She has found a passion that simply drives her to be the best version of herself.

When someone asks, “What do you do?” What do you say:
“I support adults with disabilities living their fullest lives in the community.”

What does a typical work day look like for you? If there is no typical, describe your most recent work day:
“Everyone calls me the ‘runner.’ I feel that I’m a ‘first responder’ to all calls and issues that arise with clients. When I’m not out on site supporting my clients and their staff, I’m assisting my Residential Manager with financials and bank statements, scheduling coverage, training new staff, and communicating with DDA, just to name a few.”

What do you like most about your job?
“Interaction with clients and working hand in hand as a team with everyone that I encounter. I really enjoy that we all work towards the same goals.”

What three words/phrases would you use to describe your role?
“Lead by example, don’t ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do, and keep an open mind.”

What personal quality or skill do you think has helped you most in your job?
“Keeping calm in all situations. You must have that – along with the ability to mediate.”

Given your experience, what would you say to someone who has just started in the field? (and/or) What about someone who is interested in a job like yours?
“You can’t take accidents or reactions personally. A lot of patience is needed. Give feedback to others, and remember to breath. You have support when you need it – don’t forget that, you are not alone. There are tools for helping you with all issues that come up. I would also say that this is one of the most fulfilling jobs you can have.”
